Church revitalization has existed since the New Testament era, but it has only recently emerged as a formal field of study. Historically labeled as “comeback” or “turnaround” churches, revitalization efforts were often seen as entry-level assignments for young pastors or temporary stepping stones toward more prestigious ministry roles. Today, however, leaders are gaining a clearer understanding of what effective revitalization requires, including specific actions, measurable indicators of progress, and the reality of sustained spiritual warfare. As research and practice mature, attention is shifting from strategies alone to the leaders themselves, and after hundreds of consultations and coaching engagements, a distinct personality profile of pastors who successfully initiate church revitalization is beginning to take shape.
