{"id":2416,"date":"2014-03-31T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-03-31T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thomrainer.wpengine.com?p=2416"},"modified":"2020-02-07T15:51:19","modified_gmt":"2020-02-07T21:51:19","slug":"twenty-influential-evangelicals-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/churchanswers.com\/blog\/twenty-influential-evangelicals-america\/","title":{"rendered":"Twenty of the Most Influential Evangelicals in America"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I conducted an informal survey of over 30 persons, simply asking them to name the most influential evangelicals in America today. Though my choice of the respondents was subjective, I do have confidence that the men and women who gave me these names are very knowledgeable about the evangelical scene in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The respondents represent a cross section of denominational and non-denominational churches and entities. From my perspective, those I surveyed are clearly evangelicals themselves. Among the criteria I gave them, I included the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Limit the responses to Americans.<\/li>\n<li>The names must represent living persons.<\/li>\n<li>Name at least eight persons.<\/li>\n<li>Only include evangelicals. I did not define \u201cevangelical.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Think &#8220;influential&#8221; rather than just those with whom you agree.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The problem with any list such as this one is the names you omit. Many well-known evangelicals did not make this top twenty list. I realize that another list done by another person would likely yield some different names. Here, then, are twenty of the most influential evangelicals listed in alphabetical order.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MattChandler74\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Matt Chandler<\/b><\/a> \u2014 The lead pastor of teaching at The Village Church in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifeway.com\/Keyword\/matt+chandler?carid=jhowe-rainer-mattchandler\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prominent author<\/a>. Chandler\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/village-church-sermon-audio\/id82014403?mt=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">podcast<\/a> is consistently in the top five of the leading Christian podcasts on iTunes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PastorChoco\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Wilfredo De Jesus<\/b><\/a> \u2014\u00a0Better known as Pastor Choco, he is the head pastor of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mynewlife.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Life Covenant Church<\/a> in Chicago and the author of <i>Amazing<\/i><i> <\/i><i>Faith<\/i>. <i>Time<\/i> magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in America in 2013.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DouthatNYT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Ross Douthat<\/b><\/a> \u2014\u00a0Author, blogger and <i>New York Times<\/i> columnist. He was a senior editor at <i>The Atlantic<\/i> and wrote <i>Bad Religion: How We Became a Nation of Heretics.<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/drtonyevans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Tony Evans<\/b><\/a> \u2014\u00a0Prolific author and senior pastor at Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas. Prominent evangelist.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/craiggroeschel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Craig Groeschel<\/b><\/a> \u2014 Founder and senior pastor of <a href=\"http:\/\/LifeChurch.tv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LifeChurch.tv<\/a>, one of the largest churches in the United States with 15 locations in five states.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BillHybels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Bill Hybels<\/b><\/a> \u2014\u00a0Founding and senior pastor of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.willowcreek.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Willow Creek Community Church<\/a> in South Barrington, Illinois, and founder of the Willow Creek Association. Most common venue is Bible teaching to women. In that sense, it is more of a panel than a survey. Though the respondents did not have to offer comments, most of them did. Some of them offered two lists, such as two levels of influence. Others struggled in their own responses, trying to decide whether or not different persons were truly evangelicals.<\/p>\n<p>I appreciate their time and thoughtfulness.
