Occasionally over the last few years, I\u2019ve spent time with a church staff that seemed really happy together. Here are some characteristics that mark those teams:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. They spend time together outside the office.<\/strong> They don\u2019t run from each other as soon as the workday is over. They\u2019re not \u201cbusiness acquaintances\u201d\u2014they\u2019re friends.<\/li>\n
  2. They know each other\u2019s families.<\/strong> They know the names of spouses and children. Even the most introverted of the group fits in somehow.<\/li>\n
  3. They laugh a lot.<\/strong> That\u2019s because they actually have fun together. They\u2019re comfortable hanging out just for the fun of it.<\/li>\n
  4. They work hard together.<\/strong> They share a common vision, and their commitment to that vision and to each other results in diligent, consistent work.<\/li>\n
  5. They help each other succeed.<\/strong> Nobody\u2019s fighting a turf war. Everybody\u2019s on the same team, and they know that the success of one contributes to the success of all.<\/li>\n
  6. They battle out their differences in a healthy way.<\/strong> They disagree at times, but they do it in a biblical way. And, after they\u2019ve reached a conclusion, they present to the congregation a genuinely united front.<\/li>\n
  7. They\u2019re committed where they are.<\/strong> Nobody\u2019s actively looking for a new position. When you enjoy being part of the team, you don\u2019t think much about the next opportunity out there.<\/li>\n
  8. Their happiness is infectious.<\/strong> Whether they\u2019re sharing announcements or kneeling at the altar, you can just tell they love each other. Sometimes, they\u2019re the first united, excited staff team their church has ever seen.<\/li>\n
  9. They don\u2019t see themselves as silos.<\/strong> Even when the church structure promotes silos, they fight against that tendency. They intentionally think about how their individual ministries connect with others.<\/li>\n
  10. They pray a lot together.<\/strong> Their prayers aren\u2019t just reactions to needs; they\u2019re heartfelt intercession for brothers and sisters who serve as a team. They\u2019re a confession of \u201cLord, we want to do this together, but we can\u2019t do this at all without you.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
