{"id":714491,"date":"2020-06-24T23:01:45","date_gmt":"2020-06-25T03:01:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/churchanswers.com\/?p=714491"},"modified":"2020-07-02T13:11:14","modified_gmt":"2020-07-02T17:11:14","slug":"do-your-know-your-why","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/churchanswers.com\/blog\/do-your-know-your-why\/","title":{"rendered":"Do You Know Your &#8220;Why&#8221;?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Without a doubt, our <i>what<\/i> and <i>how<\/i> has changed and will continue to change. <i>How<\/i> we greet guests, <i>what <\/i>we do about communion, and <i>how <\/i>we move large groups of people into and out of worship are all necessary topics of discussion. But those <i>what <\/i>and <i>how <\/i>conversations will be easier as long as our <i>why<\/i> is clear.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> we care for our guests: we want to remove every barrier that would keep them from clearly hearing the gospel.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Does fear of the unknown make it difficult for a guest to come to your church? Then think through their experience before they arrive: clear signage, close parking, and friendly greeters let them know you expected them to come and you\u2019re glad they did. Does the guest\u2019s apprehension over organized religion keep them from hearing the gospel? Then design your service with the outsider in mind: don\u2019t make them interpret insider language or detangle archaic traditions. Drop some bread crumbs throughout the service so that it\u2019s easy for them to catch up and feel in the know.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides the obvious benefits to our guests, having a clear <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> benefits three other groups of people:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b> Church staff and leadership.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not long ago I was in an hour-long meeting to craft a sentence. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One sentence<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The reason it took so long is because that sentence would become the \u201cpitch\u201d for our staff to realize the importance of a new ministry. If our team doesn\u2019t understand <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an initiative exists, if they don\u2019t understand the win, they\u2019ll never become a champion of it. Budgets, allocation of resources, and alignment of values all depend on a strong <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><b> Volunteers.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pity the poor church greeter who knows exactly <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to do but doesn\u2019t know <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they do it. They may hand out bulletins with military precision, but if they don\u2019t know that they are a stop in the guest\u2019s journey to hear the gospel, they may not do it with the right heart. If the weather gets too hot or too cold, they may throw in the towel because they forget that a guest\u2019s comfort is more important than their discomfort.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><b> Our congregation.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you get serious about serving guests well, it will ruffle the feathers of those who have been around a while.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If our <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is removing all barriers to the gospel, then that means beloved traditions may be dismantled and sacred cows are thrown on the grill. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Helping your congregation know the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will help them lay aside their preference so that others may hear the gospel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we begin to meet corporately again, I can\u2019t tell you how to interpret your <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or your <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That will be based on your local and state regulations, the size and age of your congregation, and the wisdom of your church leadership. But I can tell you that a clear <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a great filter and foundation. Know your <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the other details will be clear.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Without a doubt, our what and how has changed and will continue to change.
