{"id":723965,"date":"2020-10-22T02:00:10","date_gmt":"2020-10-22T06:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/churchanswers.com\/?p=723965"},"modified":"2020-10-19T16:07:07","modified_gmt":"2020-10-19T20:07:07","slug":"5-new-realities-of-first-impressions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/churchanswers.com\/blog\/5-new-realities-of-first-impressions\/","title":{"rendered":"5 New Realities of First Impressions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There have been a lot of reinvented wheels in 2020. From working at home to masking up to providing a virtual option for nearly <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">everything<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we\u2019ve all had to rethink those things that come naturally to us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As churches begin to regather in person, our guest services and hospitality teams will have to undergo some of the most radical reinventions.<\/span> <b>Handshakes, hugs, and high fives are gone for a while.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Up-close-and-personal conversations are frowned upon. And that time set aside to turn and greet your neighbor during the service? Yeah, roughly half of your people hated that well before COVID. <\/span><b>Maybe it\u2019s time to just let that one go.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how do we welcome guests in the age of social distancing? I think there are at least five things to think about:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b> Know the plan and follow the plan.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your church has a COVID response plan or reopening protocols, you and your team should know and follow those.<\/span> <b>It will be frustrating to your guests if they read one thing on the website, but see something else enforced.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Make sure that you are aligned on talking points, rules, and what to do in the case of a tough conversation.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><b> Be hospitable to every guest (and their accompanying perspective).<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some first-time guests are hungry to be around people. Their desire for relationships may override their fear of the pandemic. Other guests are going to be fearful of gathering with a large crowd &#8211; if they show up at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As hospitality directors, <\/span><b>we have to be aware of all sides and respond accordingly.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We shouldn\u2019t shame people for being fearful or give them the side eye for being overly confident. They\u2019re our honored guests, and we should treat them as such.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><b> Re-train and de-train your volunteers.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have a lady on our team who is a championship hugger. If hugging were an Olympic sport, she\u2019d be Michael Phelps. She &#8211; and others like her &#8211; are going to be among those who will have difficulty returning to their normal volunteer role. Taking away her hugs will be like clipping a bird\u2019s wings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>You have huggers and hand-shakers too, but it\u2019s important that they know the big win and follow the larger plan. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Help them to be aware of varying fears and perspectives. Encourage them to scale back on physical touch for a while. And coach them on how to lead by example in following the rules of reopening.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><b> Go as touch-free as possible.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think through every moment of your guest\u2019s experience from the time they pull up in the parking lot to the time they leave. <\/span><b>What are the tactile interactions they\u2019d normally have, and how should you rethink those? <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Your first-time guest tent.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you hand out a gift or ask for information, how can you move all of that to a digital format? Most church databases offer embedded forms that can be accessed from your guest\u2019s smartphone. You can also display a QR code that would point them to a simple Google or Wufoo form. <\/span><b>Instead of an informational brochure, point them to the website or a simple pdf.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Instead of a coffee mug, send them a link to a $5 gift card to a local coffee shop.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Door handles. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In normal times, we\u2019d open the door for guests as an act of love. Now, we do it as an act of safety. Post volunteers at all doors (or prop them open if the weather is nice). In restrooms with inward-opening doors, consider installing a \u201cfoot pull\u201d to keep hands germ-free.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Bulletins. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forego these super-spreaders for the time being, opting for a digital access version or simple prompts from the stage or screen.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Offering plates. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think about the number of hands those plates pass through on a given weekend. <\/span><b>Now is a great time to encourage online giving<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or to post a few volunteers with buckets at the doors upon exit.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Communion. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than the typical cup-and-wafer in a common dish, consider switching to the pre-packaged options for the next several months. (The great news is, they have a shelf life of a century or two, so they won\u2019t go to waste.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Handshakes and hugs. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve addressed this a couple of times so far, but signage and stage announcements can go a long way to set a standard expectation. We have signs when you enter our facilities that say \u201cAir high fives encouraged!\u201d It\u2019s a fun way to remind people that physical contact should be avoided for now.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><b> Let them know what\u2019s not normal.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Very few of our guests will be showing up to the church that we know and love. Don\u2019t hesitate to let them know about ministries you\u2019d offer during normal times (coffee bar, kids\u2019 environments, etc.), but also don\u2019t dwell on the negative. <\/span><b>It\u2019s okay to point to a brighter future, but don\u2019t make them regret showing up in the present.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those of us in the guest services world have challenging days ahead. But while our <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may have changed, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/churchanswers.com\/blog\/do-your-know-your-why\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> remains constant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
