No matter how old I get, I have much room to grow as a leader. In fact, I watch other <\/span>leaders who inspire and challenge me to lead better. Here are some leadership <\/span>characteristics I\u2019ve seen in these folks (who are, most often, local church pastors):<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1. They strive to imitate Jesus<\/b>. That\u2019s the bottom line for them: they want to please the Lord.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2. They make decisions and don\u2019t second-guess their direction<\/b>. That\u2019s usually because they\u2019ve prayerfully done their homework.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. They view failure as an opportunity to improve.<\/b> They don\u2019t get frustrated and give up; they strategize <\/span>to do better<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. They pray first and then plan\u2014not the other way around.<\/b> This characteristic might be the toughest one to emulate, for most leaders are \u201cdo-ers\u201d first.<\/span><\/p>\n

5. They genuinely model what they expect from others.<\/b> Because they live obediently and openly speak of their faith, no one questions their walk with the Lord.<\/span><\/p>\n

6. They clearly connect with their congregation\u2014even if primarily only through the preaching event.<\/b> Some of these leaders lead megachurches, but they\u2019re uniquely able to connect through preaching as if they were in the individual homes of each church member.<\/span><\/p>\n

7. They still have mentors who pour into them.<\/b> One of these leaders is in his 70s, and his mentors are in their 90s. All these folks continue to be iron sharpening iron.<\/span><\/p>\n

8. Their speech is peppered with memorized scripture.<\/b> Their knowledge of the Bible shows their love for God\u2019s Word <\/span>and <\/span><\/i>challenges church members to listen to them prayerfully and expectantly.<\/span><\/p>\n

9. They have a clear vision for where they want their church to go<\/b>. They can, in fact, usually state that vision concisely, and they\u2019re continually seeking God\u2019s direction for the next steps.<\/span><\/p>\n

10. They operate with \u201chumble confidence.\u201d<\/b> They know they don\u2019t deserve to lead God\u2019s church, but they also know He has called them.<\/span><\/p>\n

11. They are fully where they are today \u2013 not looking for the next place to serve tomorrow.<\/b> They live in the present tense of God\u2019s will.<\/span><\/p>\n
