Some years ago, I wrote a post entitled, \u201c<\/span>Why Spouses Should Pray Together Each Day<\/span><\/a>.\u201d I still believe it\u2019s important that we make this commitment. I\u2019ve realized since then, though, that the struggle to take this step is still a real one for many of us. Here\u2019s why:<\/span><\/p>\n

1. We don\u2019t pray much in general.<\/b> Prayer is a struggle for many of us. When that\u2019s the case, it\u2019s not likely we\u2019ll pray with our spouses, either.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Our marriages aren\u2019t really built on the foundation of God.<\/b> We might attend church together, and others think of us as a strong Christian family\u2014but faith is not the bedrock of our home.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Our spouses know best when we\u2019re not really walking with God.<\/b> They know when our prayers don\u2019t come from a pure, obedient heart\u2014so we don\u2019t pray with them at all.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. We convince ourselves we can\u2019t find the time to pray each day.<\/b> That may be the case if our goal is to pray together for hours, but that\u2019s not my thinking. I want us to start <\/span>somewhere<\/span><\/i>, even if the prayers are short and sweet.<\/span><\/p>\n

5. We\u2019re uncomfortable praying in front of others.<\/b> For some, that includes praying in front of our spouse when it\u2019s just the two of us in the room.<\/span><\/p>\n

6. We don\u2019t like the level of spiritual intimacy prayer requires.<\/b> The intimacy of praying together is, in some ways, the deepest intimacy we can experience\u2014and that makes us anxious.<\/span><\/p>\n

7. Often, our spouse\u2019s level of commitment to Christ far exceeds ours.<\/b> If we\u2019re honest, we\u2019re intimidated to pray when that\u2019s the situation.<\/span><\/p>\n

8. We\u2019ve tried it before, and it didn\u2019t work then.<\/b> So, we\u2019ve now given up on trying, even though both of us may have grown since then.<\/span><\/p>\n

9. We count our prayer of grace over a meal as sufficient. <\/b>Yes, that\u2019s often with our spouse, but I\u2019m talking about something more intentional here. I\u2019m talking about genuinely seeking God together.<\/span><\/p>\n

10. No one\u2019s ever challenged us to pray with our spouse daily. <\/b>That\u2019s my challenge to you today via this post. And to me.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
