The survey listed several pastoral responsibilities, and I asked them to share the minimum amount of time they believed I should devote to each area every week. The list included about twenty predefined responsibilities, with space for them to add others if they wished.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I wasn\u2019t entirely sure what I expected from the survey, but the results were startling. After tallying the responses, I discovered that to meet the deacons\u2019 minimum expectations, I would need to dedicate the following hours each week:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><b>Prayer at the church<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: 14 hours<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Sermon preparation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: 18 hours<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Outreach and evangelism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: 10 hours<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Counseling<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: 10 hours<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Hospital and home visits<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: 15 hours<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Administrative functions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: 18 hours<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Community involvement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: 5 hours<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Denominational involvement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: 5 hours<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Church meetings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: 5 hours<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Worship services\/preaching<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: 4 hours<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Other<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: 10 hours<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Total: 114 hours per week<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To put this in perspective, meeting the minimum expectations of twelve deacons would have required me to work over 16 hours a day, seven days a week. Alternatively, if I took one day off, I\u2019d need to work 19 hours a day for six days a week. And keep in mind, these expectations came from just twelve people\u2014not the entire congregation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This exercise revealed an impossible reality: no pastor can humanly meet the varied and often conflicting expectations of every church member. The sheer number of responsibilities competing for limited hours in the week creates constant tension for pastors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A Few Key Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><b>For Laypeople<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: What are your workweek expectations of your pastor? Are they realistic, and do they account for the human limitations of a single individual?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>For Pastors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: How do you manage these expectations without succumbing to burnout or neglecting your personal and family life?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reflecting on this topic reminds us that ministry is a calling, but it is also a role performed by humans with finite time and energy.
