If you\u2019ve been in church leadership longer than a few months, you\u2019ve learned an important skill: <\/span>translation<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not Greek or Hebrew.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Committee.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the surface, the words sound spiritual, thoughtful, and collaborative. Underneath, there is often a second language being spoken\u2014one shaped by caution, history, personalities, and the deep desire to avoid change.<\/span><\/p>\n

With a smile (and a little truth), here is a short translation guide for phrases many of us have heard more times than we can count.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s put this on the agenda for next month.\u201d<\/b>
\n<\/b> Translation: <\/span>\u201cWe hope you forget about this before next month arrives.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to form a subcommittee.\u201d<\/b>
\n<\/b> Translation: <\/span>\u201cThis idea makes us nervous, so let\u2019s slow it down until it quietly expires.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s proceed with caution.\u201d<\/b>
\n<\/b> Translation: <\/span>\u201cThis idea is going to create too much work for us.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to think about the long-term.\u201d<\/b>
\n<\/b> Translation: <\/span>\u201cThis is another crazy idea by the pastor, and we can outlast him.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t want to rush the Spirit.\u201d<\/b>
\n<\/b> Translation: <\/span>\u201cWe are uncomfortable, and this sounds more spiritual than saying so.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cThis could create division.\u201d<\/b>
\n<\/b> Translation: <\/span>\u201cSomeone influential has already expressed concern.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve never done it that way before.\u201d<\/b>
\n<\/b> Translation: <\/span>\u201cAnd we would prefer to keep it that way until at least the Second Coming.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s pray about it.\u201d<\/b>
\n<\/b> Translation: <\/span>\u201cWe are not ready to decide, and prayer feels like a safe parking place.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a great idea\u2014for another church.\u201d<\/b>
\n<\/b> Translation: <\/span>\u201cWe hope you stop talking now.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to be good stewards.\u201d<\/b>
\n<\/b> Translation: <\/span>\u201cWe\u2019ve got plenty of money, but we are tight as a drum.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

None of these statements are inherently bad. In fact, many of them are spoken with good intentions and sincere hearts. The trouble comes when translation replaces clarity, and spiritual language becomes a shield instead of a guide.<\/span><\/p>\n

Healthy churches learn to say what they mean\u2014with kindness, humility, and courage. They pray <\/span>and<\/span><\/i> decide. They steward resources <\/span>and<\/span><\/i> take faithful risks. They honor the past <\/span>without being trapped by it<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

And occasionally, they laugh at themselves in the process.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes, a little translation helps everyone move forward together.<\/span><\/p>\n
