Centennial AME Zion Church traces its roots back to the late 19th century, founded by descendants of freed slaves who longed for a place to worship freely and boldly. The church officially began in 1894, and its original small frame building was constructed in 1896. Early gatherings took place in private homes until leaders such as Rev. R.S. Cottene and Mrs. Sarah Oliver secured the land that would become the church’s permanent home.
Today, this historic congregation continues to serve the Closter community with faith, resilience, and hope.
